View Full Version : Meeting of MWO members & Forum Folk - RI or southern Mass

Brad

There are several folks in the RI and southern Mass area. Is there interest in having a get together this winter? Lunch or dinner some place in that area? Maybe in February or early March? Lets talk about interest - date - and possible locations.

I am willing to be there as long as I do not have a conflict.

CHRIS
12-17-2010, 01:17 PM
I am definetly into it. I think it would be so great. Maybe we could find a place sorta in between Southeast Mass./RI and New Hampshire so that more of us could get to it without a long drive. I think if at all poss. on a weekend day might help for more people to be able to join.

Any ideas on dates? Or should I toss out a few I know would be fine for me? Then we can talk about where we might have it.

Brad

Let me toss out Friday the 28th of January - or Sunday the 30th of January?

The big surprise MWO event Scot has been talking about on Facebook is now scheduled for some time on the 27th.

Sometime in February or March will work for me, Southern Mass or RI won't be too long of a ride from Jersey.

The time to be in New England would be the 27th of the big "event". Then having the get together the evening of the 28th might work well.

How about late afternoon on Sunday, Jan 30th? If this is good for several folks, lets pick a place to meet - for drinks - or for dinner. Suggestions? Feedback?

CHRIS
12-18-2010, 07:37 PM
I am good with that day. Anybody else?? Also can anybody recommend a good place where a bunch of us can meet?

Brad
12-18-2010, 08:19 PM
This get together is open to very active Forum members - infrequent posters - lurkers - lovers of Mt Washington - members of the Observatory and those who want to be members. That should include just about anyone.

Would be a great Birthday present for me hanging with the forum / obs folk. Not sure what location your looking at but let me throw out chandlers resteraunt at the yankee candle company in Deerfield Mass. Easy to get to from all areas of New england and also for us lower folk who live down below. Just a thought. Chandlers does have a very nice meeting room in the back. The room is actually the wine storage room which is rather cool.

Brad

That looks like a nice location and place to eat. I was assuming something to the east of there to make it closer to cape Cod and RI folks. But, if we expand our thoughts to include NY and NJ folks this could be a good spot. Chris, Karen, Mark - how would this location work for a meet up and dinner?

Brad
12-20-2010, 02:47 PM
Another suggestion came in for The Lafayette House http://www.lafayettehouse.com at Foxborough. Check the Tavern Menu - the regular dinner is very expensive. Anyone been there - or other suggestions?

Deerfield is fine with me.
There are a few places out that way I'd like to photograph and I could always use some new candles.

We could do it but 2-1/2 hours each way is a bit more than I had been figuring on for just a meet-up for dinner. I realize that it's more than that for the NY/NJ folks so maybe it's a compromise. On the other hand something in CT might be more central for everyone (if we aren't counting ME). Maybe we should get a list of all the potential attendees with their home locations and see what winds up being the most central spot and then looking for a meeting spot near there...

We do have several folks in the NJ/PA area and we might want to think about another meet-up in NJ in February. This would be great if we can get 2 new forum members to join us! Or more are welcome.

With this group as of now the Foxboro or RI area could work well. Mark, is there a suggestion of a nice place off I-95 in RI we could think about? Or in Providence.

The Foxboro suggestion looks like a good place. I'll give some thought to RI spots that are convenient to I-95 and have good group facilities. Someplace like Mystic CT might work well too. Not too far for the southern MA folks and certainly closer for the NY/NJ group.

Mark, do you know anything about this one?

We've been to Trinity several times. Great food. Parking in PVD and getting around can be a bit of a bother but shouldn't be too bad on a Sunday. I'm still contemplating other RI spots to suggest. One that is very good and very easy access to I-95 is this one (it's also only 2 miles from my house).

http://www.elevenfortyninerestaurant.com/1149.html

Only thing is it's kind of pricey for dinner. Lunch is more reasonable but Sunday is just brunch and then dinner.

There is also an Outback Steak House and a Texas Roadhouse (Barbecue) right off the same exit which would be cheaper alternatives.

The only thing I'm not sure about with all these locations is if they're going to be amenable to folks hanging out after dinner. I suppose as long as we're still buying drinks. But then people do still have to drive...

Brad
12-21-2010, 06:59 PM
1149 looks interesting. The last time I was in that area there was nothing at that exit. We considered it the cut-off from I-95 to get over to East Greenwich. That is when the cut-off was new.

That was definitely a long time ago Brad. That's been a pretty bustling intersection for quite a long time. In the last 10 years there have been at least 3 (I think 4 actually) restaurants in the 1149 location. This is definitely the best of them.

Interesting menu. They have Bangers & Mash - so I am up for it. I don't drink. But, that does not matter to me.

The location is not as good for NY and NJ but we might want to plan a gathering in NJ in February anyway.

I've never eaten at Chandlers, but am fully aware of Yankee Candle in Deerfield Mass. I think I helped with someones kids college fund back in October...:D

Mystic is beautiful, Love GO Fish right by the Aquarium and it's right off of 95. Old Mystic Village is right outside the door, lots of little shops to go into and nice way to spend an afternoon. Go Fish has a really pretty front room for a gathering, very New England decor to me. The BEST Chowder I've ever had and I think average prices. I stop there every time I am in the area.

And Mystic is just a few miles from the casino's. Not sure if I could make a Sunday, but who knows.

Lots of good choices now. The casinos are good. My brother-in-law is a Mohegan tribal member so we've spent quite a bit of time at Mohegan Sun. A lot of good restaurants and good buffet. Same's true for Foxwoods. Not sure about reservations and best times based on the size of the crowd we wind up with but should be easy to check.

I do like the sound of British Beer Co. Any place with bangers and mash is good with me!

You're definitely right about Go Fish Kathy. It's the first place that came to mind when I mentioned Mystic (although there are other good choices as well). We've never had anything but great meals there and like you said the chowder is AWESOME.

So many choices. This may call for multiple meet-ups!

Someone needs to take charge here. We have several excellent options between the Foxboro area and Mystic.

Okay - I propose we meet at the Beer place for our meeting in January. Then we plan, maybe for the end of March, for another meeting in Mystic.

A proposal is on the table.

I'd love to make this meeting if possible. I haven't ordered a kilt yet. I'm suppose to get one at the Celtic Fair this June with Dave. But maybe I should order one earlier? I've always liked the red tartan colors for flannel shirts, but would that be an acceptable color for a kilt? Amerikilt sounds like a good company to buy one from too.

I don't want to throw a wrench in and confuse things now, but here's a thought. Since this is on a Sunday and some folks are coming from quite a distance would it make sense to shoot for an earlier start time? Doesn't really matter to us since we're only an hour away. If this would screw things up for anyone who's already planning to attend then we shouldn't consider it. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

As they are newly opened they don't take reservations even for a group as large as ours. She doesn't believe that a group of 20 would be a problem but they don't have a separate room for large gatherings. Her feeling would be that they would just setup 2 tables of 10.

Thoughts?

Late responding in general but 1pm is fine for us (it had better be since I suggested it). As long as they think our group size isn't a problem we should just go for it. If there's an issue maybe there's something that our kilted contingent could do to chase other patrons away

Fine with me, if I need to get there early to help secure our spot - I will. Someone needs to test out the beer before the group arrives.

As for Mark's comment about chasing the other patrons away. BlueDog appointed me President of Hikers in Kilts fan club so, I hope the kilted men keep your kilts down as not to scare the other patrons away :eek:

I'm really excited about getting together to see old friends and the chance to meet new ones. Other than Gettysburg, has this been done before?

1pm is great for us

Not having a private room is fine. Being a non-game Sunday this should not be an issue. If we crowd the place - so what - that is what they are there for.

Karen, this is something I have wanted to do but never had the time or chance to do it. Summer camps have off-season reunions. Why shouldn't we have winter gatherings? So, I pulled the Gettysburg group together and now the N Conway (1/23) and Franklin (1/30) events. I am hoping we can do a Mystic one and a NJ and/or Norwalk VA one. The reason for Norfolk would be to include Steve Mauran who just got stationed there in his Army training. As we have been working through the planning I have kept the Obs folks up to date so we don't step on any of their plans.

And since I don't drink, putting beer on me does not make a lot of sense - whether it is the first or last.

Yes, this is January 30th at Franklin, Mass.

Charlie will be with me in Maine for the extended weekend - so, he will come down from Maine with me.

1PM is good with me. Thanks Billy for calling ahead for us.

Dave what's your timing on this trip? I pretty much have to zip up and back all on Sunday. If you want, PM, FB, email, or call me when you get a chance. Smoke signals would work too if it's not windy. :D

Karen, no problem. This is partly why I have been called "Chief Executive Cheerleader" for MWO. I am willing to pull things together and help if I can.

I stopped in at the Observatory (valley offices) today to keep them informed with what we are doing. It is clear the Observatory runs on a very lean staff and they have a long list of things to be done. They have always wanted to do these types of get togethers but just do not have time to do it. And if they did it, they would end up being a bigger deal and a lot more work. So, we should be able to pull these off on our own for a few years anyway. At some point these could become a big deal and be real work to organize. At this point, we should be able to manage on our own.

I sent an e-mail to the store manager nearby and have gotten no response. If someone local could stop in and invite them, that would be great. We are hoping for someone from the N Conway store to join us for that event this coming weekend.

Hello Brad ~
When you say you emailed the nearby store manager, do you mean in Ma or for the N Conway gig? I'd be happy to reach out to the local store manager but, it looks like the closest EMS store to me is in Foxboro and there is a rather large football game going on tomorrow.

I can call them tomorrow morning and see if the store manager is working if not I'll try him/her again on Monday to let them know were are getting together and would love it if someone from their store could join us.

Any one know where I can get a Kilt for our get together resonably around Ct. There used to be a store in Bartlett, The Scottish Lion. I found their web site but I would need to trade in my climbing boots to afford one. Also are people not of Irish or Scottish decent alowed to wear one

For the other event in N Conway I went into the store and met the Assistant Manager. For this event I sent an email to the email address on the Facebook Fan Page for the EMS-Foxboro store. It sounds like they got it. We have a bit more time on the Franklin event to get this set up. After this game is over maybe one of you could touch base back with them to explain who we are and what we are doing.

You could try Amerikilt. They are online and out of Pa. Dave Brown has a few of theirs and I ordered one for Christmas but it came in the wrong color and they will be sending me the right color as soon as it made. They are only 98.00 plus shipping. I also have a Utilikilt and the quality is far better than A/K but they are also very expensive. As far as not being Scottish or anything to wear one. I am French/ Portugese and I am proud to wear them. So yes go for it and if you hike in it you will NEVER wear pants hiking again. Good luck.

Please join us there, have lunch and a fun time meeting others.

I got a ncie call from the store manager at EMS in Foxboro. He is tied up with family commitments and the other manager is in the store then. So, neither can join us. He will be letting others in the store know about it as well as others at the Marlboro store, which is close by. So, it is possible someone from EMS might be able to come - but, unlikely right now.
