Hey guys, I bagged Waumbek via Starr King Trail today. The full report with pictures is on my blog (link below). We got a little disoriented on the ridge so if anyone sees our tracks up there, you may have a hard time figuring out which one is the right one...but that may not be a problem if the weather gets nasty as predicted.

Very nice TR and photos Owen! It looks like you had a great day out there. Number 12 = 1/4 of the way towards your goal. Thanks for sharing with us.

Another great one Owen. Waumbek was one of our first winter 4Ks last year (and it didn't actually count as a W4k since we were back on Starr King when Spring officially started - not that we cared). I know what you mean about the trail finding on the ridge between the peaks. It's such a beautiful spot that a bit of extra wandering around actually isn't so bad ;) The photos and TR are excellent!

Thanks for the responses everyone! The ridge between the two peaks is very beautiful and I agree, Mark, wandering off the trail was actually very enjoyable.

Does anyone know if this sign is still up there or were we looking around for no reason? Maybe the photo is outdated?

It seemed like it should have been before the sign for the Kilkenny Ridge Trail, possibly to the right side of the trail in the clearing there but we searched and couldn't find anything.

Good to hear you had a great hike to Waumbek. Originally thinking the same you as stated that Waumbek isn't really anything special, it really wasn't that bad of a peak. Once was enough for us though.
It's always a nice reward when you have the spectacular views.
I don't believe the sign is there any longer. We were told that if you see the Kilkenny Range sign you've past the summit.
Hope you have the opportunity to hike more this winter.

Donna:)

We didn't see the sign in your Hike the Whites link last winter. These were the only sign in the vicinity of the summit:

Based on these I guess the real sign could have been buried...

Hey Owen,

Great report. Looks like you had great weather and some decent views. I don't think I've ever been north of the notches. The views you got are certainly awesome.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the info guys...we saw those same two signs but I guess we'll have to wait until the snow melts and someone takes some pics up there to be sure! :p

Thanks for checking it out Karl! You don't even have to drive too much further past the intersection of Rte 3 and Rte 302 to get some unique views of the Presidentials. Those two clear shots are from Rte 115.
