Hi Everyone,

I hiked up South Moat today. I was blown away at the temperature. I packed for a full-up winter hike but ended up in short sleeves the whole way. It certainly ended up making my pack pretty heavy, carrying my winter layers on my back.

The trail conditions were all over the place. Some well packed snow, some ice, some mud, some bare trail and some post-holing...a little of everything. This is the first "real" hike I've done since last September, and I definitely had a tough time with it, which means I have a lot of work to do before Seek the Peak.

My full trip report and pics are on my blog here: http://livefreeandhikenh.blogspot.com/2011/04/spend-day-bein-lazy-just-bein-natures.html

The last one is actually from the ride home. Stopped in at Chocorua Lake.

Thanks,

Nice report, Karl! Glad to see that the snow is melting! I really like the last picture over Chocorua Lake...I'm sure you'll be back in shape in no time and ready for STP.

Thanks Owen! I hope so. This hike we certainly a wake up call...need to get in shape! The snow is definitely disappearing quickly. It was amazing that hiking on it was like hiking on two different trails as the temperature increased.

Nice report and photos Karl! This is certainly the time of year for messy trails and the return of pesky bugs. Fortunately though, we all have enough time to get in shape for STP with the return of more milder temps.

Karl,
Nice report and pictures on your blog. That was quite a load, 50 lb. backpack to be carrying for the hike. That would have worn me out real quick too. Terrific ground level photo of your microspikes.
When we hiked South Moat last winter we had difficult time following the blazes once you reach the ledges. Did you have any trouble?

Donna:)

Thanks Bob! I sure hope I'll be in shape for STP. I feel like it is right around the corner...especially with a little one due June 1st!

Thanks John! It was a great day to be in the Whites for sure!

Thanks Donna! It was too heavy for me...at the beginning of the season anyway. Hopefully it will lighten a little as summer approaches and hopefully my back will get used to carrying a pack again. I was trying to be Les Stroud with the Microspike photo...for those of you who aren't FB friends with me, here it is below. I had a difficult time with the blazes at the ledge portions too. I definitely had to scout around a couple times to find the markers...especially since the quickly melting snow was diminishing tracks.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and nice comments!!!
