View Full Version : Lazy Hummingbird Sunday

It would have been a perfect day to be hiking in the Whites again yesterday - but we just got back a few days ago. It would have been a perfect day to paddle - and we almost did - except that it was "Governers Bay Day" in RI (free admission to all state beaches) and that means traffic jams everywhere near the water. So instead I sat for several hours in the shade on the deck yesterday morning with the camera and watched two pair of hummingbirds chasing each other, playing "hummingbird tag" and enjoying the trumpet vine. Nice way to spend a lazy summer morning...

This guy stopped for a while to watch the hummingbird games too

They are some beautiful shots Mark! Sometimes a lazy day at home can be as good as one anywhere else.

Mark, your patience paid off with some great shots of the hummingbirds. It's amazing how fast they fly. It's pretty rare that we see any around our house.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone.

Donna - we're definitely blessed to have them with us so much. There are at least two pair that hang out here from early spring through the summer. The love the honeysuckle and trumpet vine. They actually show up before the leave even start to come out on the vines in the spring and often sit on a bare branch for a long time (more than 5 minutes on many occasions which I believe is an eternity in hummingbird time) and just look around seeming to say "hey, where are those flowers?!". Once the flowers arrive they're here at least a dozen times a day every day. They also chitter the whole time they are eating (which I had never heard a hummingbird do before these). Makes it easy to know when they've arrived. They are definitely our favorite house guests!
