Has anyone hiked up to Carter Dome from Carter Notch recently? I see "hard packed and icy. Traction advised above and below hut" on the AMC Backcountry Weather & Trail Conditions for the Carter Notch Hut. Considering how steep this trail is normally and how icy the trails were last weekend in Crawford Notch, I am wondering how it would be going up to Carter Dome this weekend. What are the current conditions on that section of trail like, will it require yaktrax, microspikes, crampons or is it too icy to even attempt that steep section? With a chance of light snow in the next couple of days, the thought of hiking on thin snow over icy steep terrain may alter may plans. Whatever help you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks!

This is your best place to find trail conditions, though I don't see a recent one for that ascent of Carter Dome.

Most people go up from Zeta Pass in the winter. With current conditions in the mountains my guess is you will need crampons to ascend from the hut.

TrailsNH.com tracks the latest hiking conditions from 55 (and growing) forums and blogs. It looks like the reports KDT pointed you to are all that's out there (NETC and VFTT for Jan 1st).
