View Full Version : August Contest: Average Wind Speed

tdb1977
07-21-2012, 03:44 AM
With July down to 9 days, its time to look ahead at August. This month, you are going to try to guess the average wind speed on the summit for the month of August. All entries will need to be in by 11:59 PM, July 31. So, what will be the lowest temperature be recorded on the Daily F6 report for August?

1. All answers must be in whole integers
2. One submission per forum ID
3. There can be no duplicates. If an answer has been taken, the second answerer will be ignored
4. If the proper answer is not selected by anyone, the winner will be the closest guesser whose number is numerically lower than the actual answer. In other words, don't go too far hot or you will be left out in the cold
5. Any attempt to alter the wind speed is not allowed
6. Bribing the Night Observer is allowed, but that can not influence the wind
7. All guesses must be submitted here on this forum in proper English by the silent stroke of midnight on July 31
8. The official source of data is the Daily F6 as published on the Observatory's web site. It is the only source that will be considered
9. Employees of any organization with "Washington" in its name will be given special consideration and will be allowed to enter.

Good luck everyone!

7 days into the month and the average wind speed is 26.7, which rounded up to 27 miles per hour. Still a lot of time to go for the month, but BaxterCA2 is currently dead on with the gust.

Just to be sure we are all on the same page.

4. If the proper answer is not selected by anyone, the winner will be the closest guesser whose number is numerically lower than the actual answer. In other words, don't go too far hot or you will be left out in the cold

As of 8/7/12 the average wind speed is 24.8 mph. I would interpret this as Snow Miser having the correct answer/guess so far.

Hi all
Not too worried about the avg wind speed at this point since it's only August 8th..... we all should know the wind will pick up, and get slower that's a fact.

This is so true. It seems to be really quiet on the mountain lately, but it can change fiercely in a very short time...

That's for sure Prez! The mountain's stability now is not to be taken lightly.

Oh Snow Miser....The Mountain is stable (as far as I know) but, the wind....the wind changes everyday, every minute. So far you are taking this contest but, it ain't over until the fat lady sings or the F6 report for the month is offical.... See ya on the first

True SnowMiser but, the average is holding strong at 20's....... Clearly, I'm not a meteorologist, I'm just a girl :) but, the summit would need to have strong gusts for three or more days to push the average past your guess......

Just sayin!!!

Snow Miser
08-25-2012, 08:36 AM
You never know Prez. I'm by far not a meteorologist either, just a boy :) . Perhaps Isaac will help push the average up? Good luck everyone! One week to go.

Average as of this morning's F6 report is 22.2 mph. Sure hasn't been that windy on the summit this month. Will post the final results for the month, either very early Saturday morning or sometime Sunday.

And don't forget about the current contest running - Guess when the first 2" of snow will fall on the summit.

Prez, I'm a little confused. According to Rule 4, we all over guessed.

That would be correct Snow Miser. With an average speed of 23.1, currently and the closest guess is at 24 - everyone is over and no soup for anyone! :) That is of course, the wind keeps up where it is, then the average can be pulled northbound and over the 24 MPH mark.

Well, I must be reading the entire contest wrong because there is NO WAY, I'd ever guess an average wind speed on Mt Washington at anything less than 75mph for any month. I read it as the average for the entire month which is calculated at the bottom of that column on the F6 report (23.1). Sorry, if I misinterpreted the contest description.

This month, you are going to try to guess the average wind speed on the summit for the month of August. All entries will need to be in by 11:59 PM, July 31. ?

You didn't do anything wrong. I read it wrong, or it was my interpretation of the contest. I thought it was the average for the month not the average for each individual day. Again there is NO WAY I would ever guess anything less that 75MPH when it's Mt Washington.

You're doing great, please don't think my comments are critizing you or the contest. You'll find overtime, these contests are a great way of keeping this forum active. If I may ask, who exactly is Tdb1977 or is it top secret

I thought it was the average for the month not the average for each individual day.

Now I'm confused...
Isn't that the same thing? The average of each individual day, divided by the number of days in the month, is the average for the month. Correct?

Its just my initials with the year I was born. I went to school over in VT for a year at Lyndon State in 1995/96. I'm originally from CT. While in school in VT, I had the opportunity my first weekend of school to take a trip to the summit via the Auto Road. It was the first time I was on the summit. It was an absolute blast. A month later, a group of friends and I hiked up to the summit of the Mt. Washington. I don't remember the trails we took, but it was a great experience. After one year at Lyndon, I returned back home to CT to continue my schooling as things in life occurred. I returned back to the summit with a friend from high school in 99. It was the first weekend the auto road was open. Little did I know that I would move to Pittsburgh, PA soon after that trip. After 11 years, I got to go back to the summit again and thoroughly enjoyed myself again. This time, with my parents and my wife. They, however, did not enjoy the ride up. The entire ride up, I was clicking pictures and pointing things out and all they kept saying was, we're going to go over the edge. My dad made me drive back down the Mountain. I was going to school in VT to study meteorology. I had wanted to do an internship on MW when I got far enough long in school, but like I said things happened and I didnt continue along that career path. Hope that gives you a little bit about me :)

Snow Miser is the only possible winner at this point. Needs to break that 24 mph barrier for the win. The winds really started to trail off this afternoon. Monthly F6 will tell all...

Congrats Snow Miser!! Looks like you squeaked it out by .1 mph. If you use the total of 746.6 & divide by 31, it's actually .08 mph.
The last 4 days of the month were a big help. Enjoy!!
