Hi

Just wanted to intro myself...I have been a huge Mount Washington weather fan from the great state of Connecticut....went to Mount Washington this past August but due to inclement weather w/ thick fog and 70 MPH winds decided against venturing to the top. I have made it up there 3 times and once via the Cog Railway (an experience I highly recommend).

I would very much like to spend a week up at the top to experience the weather first hand (especially would like to join the 100 MPH club by trying to walk across the deck in 100+ MPH winds) rather than just reading about it on line. The Mount Washington web site is a favorite and I check the weather daily and particularly the photos throughout the seasons.

Actually our son is studying meteorology at Western Conn (or will be in January) and wants to be a meteorologist. I hope he gets a chance at spending sometime up there and maybe he can sneak me up w/ him...:p

Welcome to this forum and we look forward to your posts and pictures in the future. I am sure you will agree it is hard to explain the emotional attachment one can have with a mountain. But, I know I have that attachment. each day I check out the web cameras on top - and now I look at the Conditions image also. There is something wonderful about the power of the weather up there.

each summer I climb the mountain at least once. plus, i try to get back into Tuckerman's Ravine at least once each winter. My "Hikes" folders in my personal photo web site have pictures of many of my times up there.

I am fond of the weather starting in October thru May as when we have a weather front going thru, this is the first site I check to see what is going on on top of the Mt.

I sit here in awesome at times reading what some of the wind chill factors are in the middle of winter and can not imagine how cold it gets to the point of having water thrown from pail actually freeze in mid air because it's so cold out.

Here I sit and think 20 degrees is cold and than look to see the top of the Mt having 80 to 90 degrees below zero wind chill factor readings. Part of me wants to expeirnce what that must be like and than another part of me says nah, I'd rather sit here in my 70 degree room and wonder.......

Or you can do what I do - take the "easy route". I hike back to HoJos in the winter - and sometimes can get back to the First Aid box area at the base of the Headwall. If the wind is up on a cool February day the wind chill is down around 35 below. Good layers from REI work well and it is worth it to get out there and see how great it is.

My wife and I just moved to south central NH and are making our first visit to Mt Washington this Saturday. I have been checking the weather here for the last few months on a daily basis and watching the cams on the mountain. Can anyone tell me what the weather may be this Saturday on the top. We are probably going to take the cog Railway up for our first time, then eventually hike the next time. We are looking forward to visiting the mountain for our first time.

I would be very surprised if the Cog was running to the summit this weekend. Winter is coming to the higher summits in the next few days and promises to bring some snow and the first real icing of the season.

The COG is an experience in itself....you need to check w/ them first before making the trip over to that side of the mountain (unless you live on that side).....I doubt they would venture up w/ inclement weather (fog is one thing but snow is something else).....

They do have vans running up there every 1/2 hour but like the COG I doubt they go up in the height of a snow storm....it's a bit cheaper but it is a great ride especially when you get above tree level and going up your are on the right side of the road looking over the edge which is about 6 inches from the right tires of the van.......on some of those turns you'd swear you were going over.

If you are going to hike make sure you are in fit condition and that you dress for ANY type of weather as it can change almost immediately without warning....
