My experience with Kearsarge North is that it's always packed down by local "fitness people." Of course if there's a big snow dump the night before that might not be true. Last year I went up with big pack, snowshoes, and crampons, and somebody in lycra ran past me with summer boots. Oh well, it was good training for me to carry all that weight.
Thanks - that is the info we were looking for. If it is cold we may do this instead of getting back into Tuckermans.
Looks like we will do N Kearsarge off Hurricane Mt Road north of N Conway tomorrow morning. Should be at the trailhead around 8AM.
A great day! It was -22F at the house as we left for the trail head. Was -16F when we started hiking. Only saw one person going up. A group of 5 joined us in the fire tower and we saw several groups on the way down.
The trail was well packed down and traction was good. Having Kahtoola's on made it nice and easy going. A couple of icy spots and one place where there was not much footing. But overall the trail was easy to follow and well packed down. Some of the folks we saw as we were going down had snow shoes on - they were not really needed and probably were more of a pain than they were worth.
In the fire tower the room was cold when we got there (I wonder why) and it got up to +21F with the people inside. After taking some pictures outside I came back in and the camera lens frosted over right away. It was fine once we got back out in the cold.
Overall a very good day. Took our time going up (3 hrs) and down was a steady pace (2 hrs).
Some pictures from the day
A typical view of the trail going up. Narrow -snow covered branches on each side.
Near the summit you can see how high and far we have gone.
View from the fire tower looking northwest.
Iced over windows to the fire tower.
Kearsarge North is always a great hike! Glad you had a good time! Nice pics!
Sounds like a nice cool day, Brad!
Thanks for sharing, Brad. One day I'll be able to come along.
What a great looking day, Brad!! Beautiful pics!
It was the positive input from here on the forum that set out for Kearsarge. It is nice to be able to ask a specific question and get the answer you need. Thanks!
Great TR and pics Brad. Was thinking about you guys yesterday and wondering how the hike was going. Obviously a great day!
