    Default October Weather

What is the usual weather in mid to late October? Me and some mates are planning to hike Mount Washington via Lions Head, in mid to late October for our Duke of Edinburgh award. We are planning a hike to the summit, then back to a base camp at one of the camping grounds (have yet to decide which one), then back to the base. We will pitch camp first before we go to the summit. If there is bad weather coming we will just hunker down at our camp and hope it clears up for a climb to the summit the next day. So what is the expected weather and snow pack at this time of the year, as well is there a suggested route, and campsite?

Any response would be appreciated thanks!

Here is a picture from Tuckerman.org taken October 20th last year of Tuckermans Headwall.

Does not look like much in most places. The wind whips over the col and drops snow on the Headwall. So, it will fill in between the rocks pretty quickly.

Average late October temps are in the upper 20s, with record lows below zero. Record highs are around 50. Winds frequently gusting to hurricane force in the month. That being said, a good day in October is as good as it gets all year.

Trail conditions usually include traverses over snow and ice, traction footwear begins to become necessary by late month.

National forest campgrounds close around columbus day weekend, but I believe that Barnes Field north of Pinkham notch on rt 16 remains open. Hermit Lake Shelters are a good option below tuckerman ravine, but dress WARM...

Here it is the end of September and the weather yesterday was quite normal. The high wind over the past 24 hours was 96 mph. Temp was not bad but the wind chill is 16 degrees.

The reference web page is at www.mountwashington.org/weather/conditions.php
