With respect to today's comment about clouds/fog:
Not sure I really agree that there is some fundamental difference between fog and cloud. Furthermore I don't really follow what the argument is for there being a difference. Seems like the comment suggests that the forcing for the microphysical processes that generate hydrometeors (e.g. cloud droplets), must come from the surface? But again I don't really follow that...
To me that just makes it a boundary layer cloud. After all the forcing for fair weather cumulus arises as thermals from the surface...
Why is it not sufficient to simply say that a cloud occurring at the surface is called fog? Which is after all an arbitrary and semantic distinction. Is there truly something special about fog?
Discuss.
I get your point that fog is basically a low cloud and that is more or less how I have looked at it for years. I think the comment was more about teaching you the specifics about what fog actually is, the different forms of it, and how it comes to be made (not just a cloud that that blew down to a lower level).
Hi RK
Nice contrast photo "winter weather on the higher summits and fall weather in the valleys"...
I also like how you smoothly referenced the KR 5 Stages...I think I went through all 5 today myself![]()
