Summit Volunteer Cookout 8/5/07

Sunday night the Obs held a cookout for the summit volunteers which included a classic cookout and the chance to get a peek at the vehicles inside the Auto Road Museum. After the cookout we were invited by Howie Wemyss, president of the Auto Road to take a sunset drive to the summit. Thanks to all the people at the Obs and the Auto Road for making this event possible! Trip report and pics here:

I did not know they did this for the volunteers. It is a nice way of saying thank you. Being able to get up to the summit for sunset looked great too.

I found it interesting the sign n the wall in picture #4 (1918 Pierce Arrow) said "Highest Peak East of the Rockies". When I was growing up that is what I heard about Mt Washington. Now I know that Mt Mitchell in NC is higher at 6,684 ft which was a surprise to me. Plus, Mount Craig in NC is 6,647.

"Highest Peak in the Northeast" is still fine with me. The NC mountains have their own class of beauty. But, for rugged terrain and weather, the Presidentials are in a different class.

Hey man, thanks for the report and the pics, they are great. That was quite a treat for you guys! If I had known the museum was there I would have gone to see those old vehicles.
