    I posted this on another thread and will redo it here.

    I was driving my wife's Subaru from NC to Maine this summer. Going through VA on I-95 I started to realize I had a problem. My laptop was plugged into the car for power - but, the battery charge meter was going DOWN. Then I realized when I put the car's turn signal on the laptop screen would flash too. Flash the high beams and the screen would flash.

    When the battery level was getting real low, I popped that battery out and put in a fresh one. The meter for that one started to go down too. Then I realized I had a problem with the car, not the laptop and was suspecting the alternator was bad. I continued to drive till I hit a "major" city and pulled off the highway. Found a Subaru dealer just as my laptop battery died and the car stopped running.

    Yes, I needed a new alternator - and I had been running the car on the laptop's battery.

    and now you have 3 laptop batteries just in case it happens again


    that is a good story , they have things out there that you can jump start your car by plugging this thing into the cigarette liter

    Normally that would not include laptops. I actually had a 3rd battery in another laptop in the car but did not need to go into my reserves.

    If you put a cigarette lighter end, connected to an electric motor with a hand crank on it the passenger could generate enough to keep you on the road also. Let the passenger work for his ride!

    Yup, on our 3rd Subaru now. My folks got our first one, which I ended up inheriting later. The white and blue Yama Yagi on the side. We got sideswiped by a pulp truck once that rattled down the side denting in the doors and taking the rear view mirror with it. Got it fixed and it ran till the cows came home. The second one, I'll tell ya mister man, went 249,000 miles. The last 60,000 with a busted O-ring cause it was too expensive to get fixed, just kept adding oil. It finally died on one of our trips back home to NH. No joke, it died from a blown head gasket just as we crossed over the NH border. Right near the exit for the Daniel Webster Highway. I think it wanted to die on native soil. I was so happy for it I almost cried. Right now we have our 2005 and its doin' fine.

    5 or 6 years ago my wife was driving her Subaru wagon back from Portland to the cabin. She had picked up a friend at the airport. The weather was bad - snow & wind. Route 302 is a good road between those points, but she did not go that way for some reason. Off they went on a side road.

    She rounded a bend in the road and started down a hill - and she saw that cars and trucks were all over the road. Folks could not get up the hill on the other side of the dip due to the snow and ice. A few cars were still trying to get up the hill without much luck.

    She slowed the car down - drove past the cars off the road at the bottom of the hill - drove up the other hill going around the other cars - and drove home. No slipping - no sliding - worked just fine.

    Seams like the car of choice for people who want the traction without the huge SUV gas hog.
    The SUV thing has always boggled my mind. I have always needed a 4 wheel drive pick up for work, but then The Moms started driving them and then came the SUV. I could never understand why people who didnt need them for work would spend that kind of $. Tires, brakes, oil, parts, everything is 3 times more $.
    A Subaru makes more sense.
    My sister has had one for as long as they have been around. Wouldnt drive anything else.
    Typical ski instructor who needs to get to work no matter what the weather.

    I love the fact that my wife drives a Subaru because of the traction. I know she can go anywhere in Maine in the winter and be fine. She loves it for the turning radius and ease of parking. When we went looking for the current Subaru the model we were looking for had an extra word in it - "Limited". She was concerned because it was not like her old one.

    "It is a Subaru. It turns just like our other one." But, I will not like it if it does not turn easily. "Trust me. You will like it." She liked it.

    Our driveway has been called a ski jump - ski slope - all sorts of things. At the bottom of the hill is the garage. Directly at the bottom. I have helped many friends get their cars up the driveway before we paved it. We have never had a problem with any of the Subarus.

    I was just checking out the www.subaru.com web site. They have 2 LL Bean editions - and they now have a 6-cylinder model. That would be a big difference in performance. The engine would not have to work as hard when loaded.

    The Subaru's ARE a great vehicle - although mine has been frustrating, as of late. Somewhere around 200,000 miles it sprung a leak in the cooling system. Before I even knew it, the head gasket was gone. Long story short, I've spent almost $3,000 tracking down that leak - replacing the entire engine with another (newer) used one, brand new radiator, and all new hoses, etc. - even those running to the transmission. It's still leaking! I finally gave up throwing money at it and now I'm just replacing the antifreeze as needed. So far it's gone another 20,000 miles and drives (thanks to the newer engine) with more pep and energy than it had in years. Got me up to Mt. Washington twice this past summer . . .
    Would I buy another one? Sure! But not before this one is dead!!
