OK - For those of you who have followed along, I've just got to let you know. After 8 months and 20,000 miles of driving with a leak we simply couldn't find, I had to take the Subaru in to have another starter put in. Pretty obvious - pretty straightforward. I go to pick it up and a new technician comes out to hand me the keys. He says to me, in a very matter-of-fact way - "Oh, by the way - you had a small leak, so I fixed it."
Yes, that's right, the new technician somehow managed to find the leak that had everyone else searching and replacing parts for 4 months, in a very casual, it-took-me-five-minutes sort of way. I almost fell over. And yes, I've had two weeks, so far, of blissful driving - NOT watching the temperature gauge - NOT watching people stare, as the steam starts to rise out of the hood while stopped at a traffic light. It's like owning a new car (only THIS one has 220,000 miles on it). Well, hopefully I'll be able to drive THIS car another 200,000 miles before looking at the new Subaru's! Think how many more trips to Mt. Washington I've got NOW!
And yes, I'm delivering (in my NON-LEAKING Subaru) donuts to my new favorite technician!!
