there's EXIF data embedded in the images, it tells the make,model, serial #, focal length, etc. There's actually a ton of info in the EXIF.
It's most useful for loading up images into an editing app, to make adjustments (I use DX Optical to correct my images, so it reads the focal lengths, white balance settings, etc)
