Those are wonderful pictures! What an opportunity to be up there - see those fantastic sunsets - all the activities - and the summit fox. Picture #23 is fantastic!



The Nikon D80 is a very nice camera. Does your maximum zoom lens go to 200mm?

It was definitely a good trip. Yes, I just have the one lens - it is 18 to 200 in digital terms, which, if I remember correctly, is roughly equivalent to 28 to 300 in 35mm... It also has built-in VR.

I've seen alot of pictures of the fox, is it always the same one? Does he walk right up to everyone? I'm thinking maybe he's fed by the tourists all summer and then expects handouts from the staff (which I know they won't do).

brad it is funny that when i looked at the picture of the fox i was going to post it and say i like this one .then i started to look at the other post and the first one is that one ,you beat me to it .
i like the way the fox just looks at the people taking the shot .

The EXIF data for your pictures lists both the lens rated zoom (200mm) and also the "35mm equivalent" (300mm). I had not seen that done before. My lens have a multiplier of 1.8x. So, the comet shots I took the other day were with a 500mm zoom - times 1.8x - times 2x since I was using a range expander. this worked out to be a 1,800mm effective zoom. Amazing stuff.

It is not the same fox every time. I have seen three together at once and each one has a distinct look to them. This, by best estimates, one of the younger ones that comes up here. They are rare in the summer because they are fearful of mass amounts of people. When they come in the summer, the only time I have seen them is after the summit closes. In the winter they travel up from below tree line, catch mice on the summits of the Presidentials then head back down. As for the walking up to everyone, although they are afraid of mass amounts of people, they are very curious creatures and will come right up to you or follow you like a puppy. I have had them follow me to the precipitation can within feet of me, stalk me on the observation deck at night with their glowing eyes in my head lamp, or come up and smell me if I sit there patiently and without jolting suddenly. If you respect them they will respect you. On another note, they are fairly ugly in the summer since they lose their coats. So that may be the real reason they don't show their faces in the summer.
