A cat's name is simply a human affectation; it means nothing to the cat. Keep calling it Marty, or don't, Marty won't aknowledge the difference.

I beg to differ on a cat's name . I have three cats and they all know their names. One of my cats will even come when called (most of the time). While the cats may not know the meaning of the name, they do learn that it is what we use to interact with them, and they respond. Cats are amazingly personable and communicative. I'm sure those that own them, or are owned by them, would agree.
