They survived 12 days in the outdoors, which is pretty remarkable.

They had groceries and enough survival instincts to utilize stuff in the vehicle (seat cushions for snow shoes, carburetor cleaner fluid and spray deodorant to start a fire).

I have some stuff in my truck but I guess I really do need to create a real winter kit. I do keep my snowshoes and poles in the back, just incase (not that we have conditions like out in Utah, but still, you go over the edge of the road and it might be too steep to get back to the highway.
