    Default gloves or mittens

I usually wear gloves and have mittens in my pack for backup.

    I usually wear mittens.

I carry light and heavyweight capilene gloves plus expedition style mittens.

That combination allows me to mix and match for almost any condition.

I rely on a combination of both...I wear a random poly liner, then OR contact gloves under OR alti mitts. (Almost) never cold that way...and with the layering, you have options for dexterity and warmth...
