I assume they are propane for cooking at the Lakes of the Clouds hut. I'm sure they're set up there for removal, probably in the snow when they can be dragged out. They probably got there by helicopter, maybe they leave that way too. Any hut people who can shed more light on this? In my opinion, it's too bad they're not beer kegs.

What a great day! Excellent pictures. They make me want to do the same trail Dec 3rd when I am up for a hike - if the weather says warm.

They are propane tanks for cooking at Lakes of the Clouds hut. The tank farm is out back (west) of the building. I read somewhere about the spring activities to resupply all the huts in the Whites - at one time. It sounded like quite an operation.

Brad,
For your Dec. 3rd hike, I would say it isn't going to be like it is this week. The long range forecast as of this morning is calling for colder air to sweep on in this weekend snow to start falling all over central and northern NH. You may need your crampons to hike then. But then again you know how the weather is in New England. I hope you get your hike in, but I am going to sound selfish here and hope we get tons of snow, LOL
anyway if you go get some good photos of the scenery with the snow everywhere.

Our current plans are to hike back into Tuckerman's Ravine. So, our hope also is for tons of snow. Last year in October we had some snow which was nice. My best time was in February 2005 when the conditions were excellent. Those pictures are at http://public.fotki.com/bradbradstre...02_tuckermans/

If the weather stays warm I would love to hike up on the west side to the Lakes and even Monroe. But, I think the chances at this point are slim.

I will be watching the forecast as we get closer. It still looks like a warm day today.

Hey Brad,
I remember last October my wife and I flew to vermont for vacation near Smugglers and they had snow on the ground. I thnk I heard Wildcat had about 4 feet of snow from that storm. the photos were very cool. Love snow and hiking photos. Yes it is warm today but hopefully by early next week or this weekend we will go back to cold temps and snow. Good luck if you make it up the west side to the Lakes.
