You might want to try Topozone

The interface is a little tricky, but they have all the standard maps.

Free online topo maps have always been hard to find . There seems to be a big lock on keeping the good quality maps as a pay service. Which is crazy because most topo maps are produced by the goverment and are not protected by copyright.

If you have Nat Geographic Topo, you can go to their website and download some trails that will show up on their maps. You would need the Northeast map set. These are pretty decent maps, based on the topo quads. I don't have this map set so I can't vouch for the quality of thesmap traces.

Just a cautionary note about TopoZone, National Geo Topo! and any product that uses the old USGS topo maps as base maps. The locations of some trails have changed since the the maps were produced. I love NG Topo! but always cross reference to the latest AMC maps which were produced using actual GPS data.

I use a GPS less for navigation and more for location fixing, timing and for post hike mapping. To illustrate just how skewed things can be take a peep at THIS map of a hike to Fort in BSP I did in August.

The red line is the GPS track. Starting from Slide Dam at the left the trail takes a sharp left, skirts the pond and climbs the ridge beyond to arrive at the col between North and South Brother. The topo map only shows the old route that goes straight up the drainage towards South Brother. BIG difference!

I just came across this site. I was linked to it from Google Earth. In the new version of Google Earth (4.02) on the layers under featured content check Trimble Outdoors trips. It shows hikes all over the country with a few in the Whites as well.
