Auto Road Vertical Temperature Profile

The data are interesting to weather buffs and those thinking of skiing Tucks, among others. What very few people know is how much planning and equipment went into gathering these temperatures. (I'm not patting my back, my predecessors got this project started.) A solar panel, thermoprobe, datalogger, radio, and tripod are mounted at thousand foot increments along the Mt Wash Auto Road (plus base and 4000' elevations). The temperature at each site is collected and radioed to a relay on top of Wildcat Mtn, where it is passed on to Mt Washington. The info is processed and submitted to our website by way of an 18 mile wireless link with our office in North Conway.

These are the kinds of projects we'll be ramping up with the support of our members.

This information is really cool. I heard rumors this summer of additional projects like this to expand the data gathering from other sources beyond the summit.

How similar will the weather conditions be at the same hieghts on other mountains. I uderstand there will be more or less wind and more or less sun depending, but I'm curious on what you guys think.

The vertical temp profile information is of great value to anyone venturing into the hills as it allows one to see where different air masses may be stratifying. Being able to view the past 12 or 24 hours at each elevation-- maybe by clicking on a elevations "box"-- would be of even more value. Mike, Would it be possible to do this on the web site?

Check out some of the locations at http://www.wunderground.com/stationm...ic=1&wmo=99999 - when you click on the location a graph shows for the past 24 hours. This approach might work.
