What's faster? Running up the Mount Washington Auto Road or riding a bike to the summit?

Biking, but not by much! About 5 minutes faster.
I couldn't conceive of running or biking to the summit. Walking at a leisurely pace, maybe.
The only limits to what we can do are set by ourselves.
That may be a quote, but I don't know who to credit it to.

I get winded just thinking about biking or running (or walking) up the auto road![]()
Did the run back in '97
Felt worse than any of the 13 marathons I ran. Nowhere to rest anywhere, there really is just one hill.
For the purpose of this exercise I'd call them about equal. I'm not sure what to make of that, but its an interesting anecdote.
I was going to do that, actually, but the $500 dollar entry fee was just too steep. Shame, really - I'd love the chance to bike Washington instead of just hiking it. That's the only time bicycles are permitted on the road, unfortunately.
Ah well. Some consolation, though, was the fact that the son in law of my sunday school teacher finished in the top ten. Good show on his part.Although, conversely, I think I'll be racing him later in August in Maine...
Anyone here see it?
I am a bit confused. I was told the bike race up the Auto Road is in August - and this is a different event. Anyone have more background?

Yes, Brad.
The August Event is the Tin Mountain Conservation Benefit "Mt Washington Bicycle Hillclimb", which has been totally sold-out, full, for years. This event has become of worldwide acclaim and is a qualifier for some important international competitions. A BIG DEAL, the 300 race positions are grabbed online in a matter of minutes every February.
A second event was inaugurated, named Newton's Revenge, to accomodate a goodly number of riders who wanted to challenge MW but could not make their way into the high-pressure, inernational competition of August race field. Newton's Revenge is now seeing a field of around 200 racers, ( and not sold out) while the August race is set at 300.
Newton's Revenge is also a benefit race, and the beneficiary is NOT far away from the finish line. Newton's Revenge benefits MWO.
Whats faster? Biking or Running???? No easy answer to that question, as the weather on MW plays a huge factor day-to-day, race-to-race, year to year. Weather is always Mt Washington's contribution.
'Under an hour' is "elite" finishing time for either run or pedal, and that represents a LOT of train, pain, focus, gear trial, and personal determination.
My hat is off to anyone who competes at that level.

Breeze,
Thanks for the information. I have a friend in the August race and it sounds like he has a practice ride coming up next Sunday morning.
