    Default Anoying problem with site

I have been experiencing an annoying problem with the forum site and I was wondering if others have seen this or if I have something set wrong on my browser. What happens is this; I make use of the unread/read notations on this forum and I like to read just about everything. If I am on the site reading and something comes up that keeps me from reading for an extended period of time, all of the message on all of the forums switch to read. The annoying part is that I can't then just use the "view first unread" function to quickly see what is new and I have to look at all the posting times to see what I have missed. Any help from the admins or other techies on this site would be appreciated. I am using IE6 on XP SP2
    Thanks

If I stay looking at the forums index page I have this happen also. If I exit back to the MWO site itself before going elsewhere, then it does not happen. There appears to be an auto refresh on the forum index page that triggers resetting the "not read" indicators.

I know what you mean, although I think that it happens regardless of what site you are visiting at any given time. I could not find any forum settings that pertain to this, but I have a theory. The forum software may be marking any posts as "read" that were created during your forum "visit", regardless if you have actually looked at them. Try closing your browser the next time you get distracted by work. When you come back, all posts created since you closed your browser should be "unread".

I have come to the forum index page - had many areas with unread indications - leave it at that page - go off and do other things leaving the browser at that page. When I come back the unread indicators are gone. I think this is what Patrad is talking about.

It must make use of Ajax to refresh the list of unread posts. What reasoning goes into marking posts as "read" when you have not read them is unknown to me. Like I said, I couldn't find a setting to change this behavior.

Using tab-browsing (IE7 or FF) you can get the new posts, and then open 20 tabs with the topics, read at your leisure, close the tabs when you are done, and you don't lose your place. You even can then be offline and read all the topics. Just don't "navigate" via site links and the last-visit time won't get updated.

I think it is a time delta from the last request that determines "seen" or not -- different boards expire posts at different intervals. All posts older than last request + 10 minutes are considered read.

Default Different in Firefox and IE

Just noticed something interesting with this. I usually keep the forum site open in a tab in Firefox and periodically either use the New Posts or the Quick Links->Today's Posts to check for new posts. This has been working fine and the unread posts almost always are accurate. The last couple of days I've been having problems with the message post screen in Firefox (but only on my work PC, not my home PC). The buttons above the edit box don't work. I solved this by running the forum using the IE Tab plugin (which renders the tab using the IE engine). The buttons work fine this way but I now noticed that the unread posts are now showing up as read - the original problem noted in this thread. Looks like it is something that IE is doing. I really hate stuff like this (and I do software for a living).

I've never had a problem with this site, but something about my computer will not let me see the obcasts.

Kathy, be sure you have the newest version of Quicktime installed (there are other choices, but Quicktime is the most prevalent): http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
