Default recent moose sightings, late August

another mama and three-month old calf, last Saturday in a beaver bog off Bear Notch Rd. I caught them as they browsed through joe pye weed and goldenrod...

    ~three-month old calf...

I came upon this adult cow on the Kate Sleeper Trail and followed her through thick spruce on East Sleeper Mtn. on Saturday...

(overexposed and motion blur, but useful...)

She was scratching her neck and rubbing against trees alot. She may have been trying to dislodge ticks, but I didn't see any on her...

She layed down for a break so I also layed down nearby and had lunch.

It was such a beautiful experience. The forest was very quiet with sunlight dappling through. Her ears were moving around constantly, listening in the direction of every little sound. After a while I slowly got up and inched a little closer for some pictures.

She eventually tucked her head down and dozed. After a while I slowly got up again and quietly left the area. She didn't even get up as she watched me leave.

    happy trails

I used to love to watch Grizzly Adams, one of my fav. as a kid.

Forestgnome, outstanding as usual. I'd be petrified to be that close to them. You do have a gift with the animals.

Amen to the above. You definitely have a gift. They allow you to get close and they don't seem to feel perturbed or threatened. Just be careful out there (sorry, the mama's coming out in me).

Great pix. I especially like the one of the moose taking a snooze. I didn't know they' curled up like that to sleep. Looks like my cat. Okay, not really, but she's sleeping the way my cat does.

So what did you two have for lunch that day? Did you have afternoon tea?

I think desert with the moose would be better.

    Chocolate mousse with moose.

I too want to know how you get so close to any of these creatures?
As a hunter I realize that movement and wind direction play a big part in getting close. Do you use camoflage and or something to cover up your scent?
