Fall Color

Took a little jaunt over to Vermont today (was craving some apple cider donuts). First stopped in Stowe at Cold Hollow Cider Mill, the cider donuts were just coming out of the oil (I love them hot!) so had to pound down a few of those.

Fall colors are looking great through Vermont, but when I drove down Route 100 to Rochester to visit where I used to live & work 15 years ago, the colors seem faded already.

Heading back over to my house in New Hampton, I noticed only some of the leaves have turned down towards Bristol, yet by my house, it seems things have peaked already.

This year's foliage is a real puzzler.

Agreed! WMUR had a story last weekend about how the businesses in the mountains were complaining about the lack of color. They said everything was still green and were afraid this would hurt the tourism business.

That's crazy! The Ashland/Holderness area is ablaze. We've got to be at peak right now.

Okay - I need some tips. For this coming weekend where should I head to get good color. The Kanc? Evans Notch? Crawford Notch? Further north?

Thanks for the tip. I am guessing you are saying south of route 2. I love that section of road anyway. Friends of ours own the old Eastman Farm that is in both NH and Maine on that road.

The color was pretty beautiful in the lakes region last Saturday. Hopefully will be even better this weekend. Looking at Jim's photos from Gorham would indicate that it's pretty spectacular farther north as well.

i was in the northern Adirondacks this past weekend and there was only about 35% color there then got to Albany and there was only about 20% there
then in northern pa about 30%

Kirk, your pano looks like the foliage around here. We get mostly yellows. Up on the Univ. of Illinois campus there are some maples, so they get lots of reds and oranges. Much nicer color there, but nothing compared to New England or even Michigan. We caught some nice color there a few years back just outside of Cadillac.

The Kanc is actually losing color now. I went one week, and got perfect colors, and the next week they were on the ground. It's weird never seen it go so fast. It still has some color though. Up 16 to Washington had some color also. I will let you know what the trip toward Somersworth looks like tomorrow.

Here's a shot from Stowe, VT from monday. The dark sky kept breaking way with some sun, so this pano is pretty unique with the darks on the left and the bright sun shining down on the church in the valley.
