Corey - the guy from NC who keeps on coming up to Maine to hike and relax - came up with me this weekend - again. So, today we were planning on doing Lafayette on the Old Bridle Path. That was till we saw the higher elevation forecast for today of wind chills "going up to 10-20 below."
We shifted to Plan B and did Pleasant Mt in West Bridgton, Maine. We left a car at the trail end on Denmark Rd and drove to the trail head on Mountain Rd by the ski area. The trail took us up and over 2 peaks and on and off good views. A bit of snow was around in the air and the wind chill on top was about 20 degrees. It turned into a nice hike.
The trail from Mountain Road is rugged but reasonably well marked. It looked to have been improved in the past couple of years. The Southeast Ridge trail going down to Denmark Rd was not well marked at all - but was not as steep. The leaves made it hard to know what you were stepping on. Pictures from the day are at http://public.fotki.com/bradbradstre.../2008-nov-dec/
Took this off route 302 by the Moose Pond causeway just as the sun was starting to come up.
There is a firetower on the main summit - but, we did not try to go up.
