How did he get this picture?

I always look through the photo journal and came across this photo. It was taken by Mike Pelchat on Dec. 12.

It looks like the fox posed for him, I Love it...

If someone should see him, please ask, I am curious.

Our shift will not see Mike until probably January of next year. But I can speculate based on my own personal experience. The foxes that we have up here are very curious by nature but at the same time very easily frightened. Odds are this fox was up by the front entrance looking for dropped food left by hikers that take shelter there during the day. Mike went out and the fox saw a strange upright animal with a weird black eye that kept moving to and from Mikes face. So he sat there waiting for this weird object to leave so he could return. Mike was probably within standing distance of the fox, so no long range lense needed. I have had foxes come up and sniff me before. They are a bit rare up here but when they are here, they are easy to take close, almost posed looking pictures of. Former observer Jim Salge could probably say the same thing as some of the best fox pics I have seen up here were taken by him.

He probably has a really cozy den though. Full of hair and grass and coughed up mice. All the things that make a fox happy.

How do you know the fox is a "he" and not a "she"? In either case, if I see the fox, I will ask if it was a pose.

The foxes are very cooperative.



When I took this picture, I was just a few feet away, on the concrete pad. If you don't seem threatening, and just let them come to you, you end up pretty close.

Mike knows the foxes pretty well, and says that this one is a small female.

Thank you all for answering, I just Love looking at everyones pictures. The fox photos are so beautiful, they always look so calm and relaxed.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mike and his wife Diane when I was up in October. He went out of his way to be kind to me, and make my Birthday a very special day and it turned out that it was his Birthday too.

Both are very warm welcoming people.

The fox I observed on the summit was a female judging by how she squatted to mark her territory.



Once I saw two together.

Mike and Diane are great people. Very knowledgeable and friendly. I always try to visit with them when I'm there.
