"LIVE FREE OR DIE...DEATH IS NOT THE WORST OF ALL EVILS." Gen. John Stark. "by reason of much foule weather and Extreme Bad Woods to travel in..." From the letter of my Great Uncle, Samuel Willard (accompanied by my grandfather Henry), to Governor Dummer on August 16, 1725, explaining the reason for his return, being instructed to "range all the country", of the Wawobadenik (White Mountains) July 19-August 16, 1725. I am a 13th generation New Englander and proud of it.
I like the old wooden snowshoes that are a bit wide up front, but not too wide. So, my recommendation is to start with the left foot.

I managed to get Pierce in early in winter while you could still bareboot it. It's a nice hike and pretty easy for the Presidentials. You probably wouldn't even need snowshoes if there hasn't been a storm in a few days....Crawford Path gets packed down pretty quickly.
Say hi to the gray jays if you end up doing the hike....tell them they owe me a cliff bar![]()
Yes, we actually used microspikes on the way up Crawford path and then used snowshoes on the way down via Edmands -- HOWEVER, there were others using snowshoes....so while you may not actually need them for posthole-avoidance purposes, you can still use them to practice with. If you get up there and are too worn out and need a break, then you could take them off and carry them back (as long as the trail is packed enough).
