If you haven't checked this out you should. Excellent examples of cloud formation caught on video. Maybe someone can tell me exactly what is happening and what sort of clouds are forming?

Are your referring to the clouds forming nearly over the camera?

Looks like orographic lift. Moist air moving over the mountain, rising and cooling until it condenses.

I'm not sure exactly what mountain is causing this, but the lift can be slightly displaced from the actual terrain feature.

Yes the clouds that are forming near the camera. To an uneducated weather observer such as myself it appears the clouds are forming right there. Please explain orographic lift. I know it when I see it, but can't explain the process. Maybe some links?

As for a name. I'd probably call those scud clouds.

Like "scud" missiles?

That is the new name for the larger ice chunks that slide down the ravine walls and come at you out of no where.

For those who can, take a look at this mornings ravine cam sunrise video.

Now this is a stretch. About 1/2 way through the video watch the shadow that crosses Tuckerman Ravine. OK Now imagine the profile of a Lion Head.

For some reason I think this is how Lion Head got it's name.

I'd say it looks more like a kitten.

Kitten Head just does not right for a rugged set of rocks.
