A Walk Up Blue Hill, Maine (5/31/09)

On our way to Bar Harbor, Maine we took a slight detour for a short climb up the one mile trail to the summit of Blue Hill; elevation gain 500 feet. Although this dome shaped monadnock is relatively low compared to the White Mountains of New Hampshire, it offers fine views of the distant mountains of Acadia National Park.
We started our hike at the Osgood trailhead which is located on Mountain Road.

Along the lower part of the trail these leaves remind me of autumn?s colors.

Ferns offered an opportunity for an abstract photo of some fronds.

Leading to the 974 foot summit are some open ledges with views towards Blue Hill harbor.

We saw many flowers including these blueberries.

Linking up with Hayes trail we strolled through open areas of blueberries and lupines.

We finished the hike in about one hour just as it started to rain.
Although we had planned this hike in advance a fellow AMC hiker (Heather), who lives in Blue Hill, also suggested this hike; since she hikes it several times a week.

There's something very special that happens when ocean and mountains come together. This is one that we've missed during our many stays on the Maine coast but is now on my list for sure. Hope you have a great time in Bar Harbor and look forward to more pictures from there.

My cousins used to go up there to get WRKO (Boston) for the Sox games. That is a great hike and the first mountain my kids have ever done... a few years ago I drove most of the way up (OK I was younger and stupider).

You even got a picture of the Blue Hill Fairgrounds! I used to spend labor days at the fair as a kid.Thanks for the memories!!!
