Backpacker Magazine - Best Dayhikes in the Northeast

The May issue of Backpacker had a section on best dayhikes in each part of the country based on a variety of criteria. Some good ones in the Northeast. Online article is here: http://www.backpacker.com/may_09_ame...inations/13102

Two things were interesting. One is that the headline photo was of Franconia Ridge but that hike wasn't included (which it of course should have been). The second is the view of Franconia Ridge in the photo. I can't for the life of me figure out what point this would have been taken from. Almost thought it was Photoshopped at first. Where is the outcropping that the person is standing on?

I think that picture is taken at the bonds. I remember climbing out on that rock outcropping and saying "wow what a view"

It looks a lot like Bond but it's definitely not. The boulder sizes don't match up....but they are strikingly similar.





There is an outcropping on Franconia Ridge where I got this shot....obviously not the angle that the pic was taken from though. I'm not positive between which of the mountains it was though. I can't tell if that is Lincoln or Lafayette in the magazine pic either, but it looks like Lafayette.).

To get that angle I think the photographer would have to leave the trail a bit because if that shot was there and obvious it would be as popular as the classic Bond shots above.

Guess if I hadn't been so lazy I would have gone through my own pictures first, although I'm not sure I would have noticed this one first pass anyway since the perspective is so different. This is 1/2 way between Lincoln and Lafayette (looking toward Lafayette). I believe that this is actually what is called Mt Truman (a bit ironic...). Sure looks a lot more like Bondcliff in the Backpacker pic. I think the photographer in the Backpacker shot could have been standing on the large boulder to the left of the path to get the angle in their shot.

Mark, I am sure you found "the spot" where that picture was taken, but for just a moment, I was ready to pull out our pictures of Bondcliff just like everyone else.
