Well, rain gutters collect water, the end of the gutter has an opening the water flows to. The hose carrys the water down into a bucket at the base of the ladder. The bottle was a ghetto fix to connect the rain gutter with the hose since we do not have a hardware store near us. We do not want to use gutter tubing to drain the water as it wouldn't tie off to the stairs very well. The rain gutter is there because it is attached to a shelf just below our parapet door. Rain leaks in slowly in the summer and in the winter, snow falls off our boots onto the shelf and then melts and used to drip into the cold room. Now, the gutter drains it into one location that we can empty when needed.
