Clouds and other Atmospheric Optical Phenomena

Looked around and didn't find any threads to fit, and didn't want to just randomly post these. I'm sure some of you have some really great photos to fit this category.

Under the wall...another stormy day this summer in CO


Mamma! Yet a different stormy day in CO. I've seen more Mammatus this year than in a loooong time! Sorry for the poor cell phone quality, but I love to catch these clouds!

This first one, to me, is the start of a Sun Dog. The light is refracting on both sides of the sun. You need calm air and perfect ice crystals to do this.

It was quite a sight, and lasted for a while. I just checked the METAR's from that about the time I took that pic...

You'd probably do a better job capturing them. I'm just using a little Nikon Coolpix. Someday.....I'll upgrade to some really nice equipment.

Prepping some dinner one evening, and looked out the kitchen window...

Well, what do you know...an EF0 about 2.5 miles south of the house. Touched down in an area where there is a new resevoir being constructed, so no damage to any homes or businesses.

No pics to add from me, but I must say that when I was living in Avon, CO I did see more atmopheric phenomena than any other place that I have lived. Quite a few perihelions, and plenty of the typical sun dogs and halos.

Here's a good shot of noctilucent clouds, auroras, and a Perseid meteor I saw posted on SpaceWeather from August 12th. I don't see the meteor in the photo, but a great photo none the less. His caption in below the photo.



PERFECT NIGHT: Robert Postma of Fort Simpson, Canada, went outside on August 12th to see the Perseids and got more than he bargained for. "I was treated to a triple whammy," he says. "The auroras came out, noctilucent clouds lit up the horizon, and a meteor streaked across the sky. It was a perfect night."

And an unlikely one....

The Perseids and, to a lesser degree, the noctilucent clouds were expected. But where did the auroras come from? There was no solar flare or gust of solar wind to spark the display. It appears to have been an unprovoked spasm of geomagnetic activity, which appeared on its own schedule, in the middle of the best meteor shower in years.

Sometimes it just pays to be outside. Keep looking up!
