A Photo of "The Captain"

The attached photo is of a place that is unofficially named as ?The Captain?. It?s a topographic feature in the White Mountains that is rarely photographed since it can be seen from only a few places, and then only from a distance. It?s tucked away in a ravine between Mt. Carrigain to its north and the Hancocks to its south. To get this photo, I bushwhacked to ledge on the north wall of the ravine.

This cliff has no official name, but some say that it is unofficially known as ?The Captain? because of its resemblance to El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.

I've been eyeing that feature in google earth for some time now. Carrigain pond as well, right behind it. I love dragging my fly rod on summer hikes as much as my camera...but I'm told that Carrigain pond is troutless...so it's slipped down the cue...

This is an incredible shot of a rarely seen NH view. Spectacular!

Just beautiful! Didn't even know this existed. Definitely looks like the El Cap of the Whites to me...

I am trying to find where this is located. Is it the ridge going north from the Hancock South Peak - or south of Carrigain - or just south of the pond?

Take a look at it in google earth. I think the name is more from the half dome structure to the back of it, moreso than the cliff face to the front. There's more of a resemblance than I first thought too...

I've been to the exact location where you were a few weeks ago. You had hiked there from the end of Sawyer Pond Rd. I happened upon that same old feild by following old logging roads off Hancock Notch Trail.









From that feild looking at The Captain, where is your ledge? It seems like it's up and to the right.

You've found a nice unobstructed view that I think is awesome. Nice bushwacking and picture!

But, of course, you do know that we are all blessed with such wonderful subject matter here in the Whites. It is almost hard to go wrong with all the beautiful things there are to photograph all around us. It sort of gives point & shoot a whole new meaning!

Anyway, as they say, a picture is sometimes worth a 1000 words. Below is an image from GoogleEarth. The spot that is labeled with the number 2 is where I took my photo. I had two other objectives for that day, i.e. the spots labeled as 1 and 3. I could not locate spot number 1 . . . do not know why. And regarding spot number 3, I did not have time on that particular day to go onward and try to find that spot. But, I am certain that I will go back to that area again!! Hey, perhaps you will even beat me to it!!
