Yeah, I'm sure they didn't plan on things breaking down the way they did. If he was the leader he should have known better, though. As for the rescuers I can't say, but they will be on tonight at 11 on wmur, so we may get an idea of what they're thinking. I'm not a fan of oprah or rosie so I don't know what they have to say, but they should use these examples to educate others who may go out and make the same mistakes.

There was another successful rescue on Mt Adams a few days ago also. We do not always hear about the events - or have a chance to understand what happened - and learn from them. It is quite a team effort to pull off a rescue like this - lots of discipline - and very qualified folks.

I have been on the Bridle path many times and don't really understand this story. Something is missing. The trail from Greenleaf to Lafayette is alittle scratchy but from Greenleaf to the parking lot is wide well marked and easy to follow. Were they on the Bridle path or were they caught on the ridge and because of bad weather just begun to head down. In that situation I fully understand how you could have a problem. Between Falling Waters trail and Bridle path is a ROUGH area and not an area I would want to descend.
At least he was found alive and we have a chance to learn from others mistakes.

Rescuers risking their lives? They might be, but they love it. That's why they signed on to mountain rescue. Its a common misconception in the media. People like Oprah and Rosie just don't get it.

I'm on a SAR team that is a member of the mountain rescue assoc .and we do it because we love to do it and most of all know how to do it the safe way .
the closest MRA team up north is from Stowe Vermont and there good at what they do .
so the SAR teams train a lot and that's why they go out in the bad weather and be safe .

One of the reports said he was just off the summit. And that he had descended on the Pemi Wilderness side.

Allright. I would like to apologize to all SAR people for suggesting they were risking their lives being out in -15 temps and hurricane force winds shaking the bushes for lost goofers. I love to be "out there" too, in all weather, but I'd rather be by the fire with a beer under those conditions. Anyone here ever heard of Albert Dow?

PS- I was on a crash rescue team in the Air Force. This doesn't make me an expert on mountain rescue by any means, but I do have some clue.

In this case, it appears inexperience added to going it alone came up with a fatal outcome.
Unlike the mild conditions in the Northeast mountains, here in Colorado, it has been a rough month, I think the total for the city has been about 56" over that time.
Waterton Canyon is about 30 minutes South of the city, it is the start of the Colorado Trail. It is where the South Platte River comes out of the Rocky Mountains.
