I think bear spray would be very effective on coyotes (gotta get it in their face though), probably more so than bears.
In reality though, your time and money would be better spent maintaining the safety of your car and keeping up on your driving skills. Your car is thousands of times more likely to kill you than a coyote...even if you spend a significant amount of your time in the outdoors.

A gun probably would be best, as long as it is carried legally. I know if I were to hike in the NW with the grizzly bears, I would definitely carry something like a .357 Magnum.
