Cave Mountain 10/28/09

With the prediction of early afternoon showers, we decided to do a small hike to Cave Mountain.
This little hike has been on our ?To Do List? for some time and this seemed to be a good opportunity to check it out.
We parked at the lot just past the bridge crossing over the Saco River on Cobb Road.

From the edge of the parking lot was a fine view looking up the Saco River towards Crawford Notch.

Crossing Cobb road and walking past the trailhead sign post is the old grave site of Dr. Leonard M. Eudy.

The Langdon Trail is apparently part of the Bear Notch Ski Touring Centers trail system (in the winter).

This is a picture of what I call the lower cave.

Old scat from an animal that lives in the cave.

The trail continued steeply on a bed of loose gravel and wet leaves to the second cave.

Entrance to second the (higher) cave.

Looking back towards the second cave, and continuing onto the summit, I noticed at this angle the rock formed a profile of a lion.

Not far above the second cave is an open ledge looking towards the town of Bartlett.

This little chipmunk was preparing for his winter lodging with some leaves tucked in his mouth.

Near the grave site I spotted these burnt umber leaves still clinging to the wet branches.

We completed 1.5 mile (rt.) at 11 o?clock.

What a great little hike! The caves look really interesting and the river views are beautiful. A good reminder that we don't need to find 8+ mile hikes for them to be good. And of course the benefit to this one is that you get to do another in the afternoon

I have to say after seeing the first picture that I'm beginning to wonder about our similarities. Not only do we both do many of the same hikes, we also both get there driving the exact same vehicle.

Hey Mark,
Besides driving the same vehicle, here's one more similarity in that we all seem to like Woodstock Station (based on one of your reports).

I would highly recommended the New England Inn for that pot roast. Been
going there for many, many years and it is always excellent.

You're right about that Donna - Woodstock Station is our favorite. I've been thinking about that pot roast since you mentioned it though and can't wait for an opportunity to try it. It's that "pot roast time of year" after all...

turkey dinner (turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, butternut squash and cranberry sauce), Sundays thru Thursdays for $5.95? It's not on the menu; you have to ask for it. We had it after our Kinsmans hike. And boy did it hit the spot!

We did not know - but I sense that this may come in handy. Now the issue is how to decide between this an the New England Inn pot roast. Looks like multiple dinners are called for here...

If you're up in the Lincoln-No.Woodstock area and are looking for a really good breakfast spot try The NotchView Country Kitchen.They are located right before The Whalestail Water Park on the same side of the road.Great chourico omelets!!!Very reasonable too.
