I have been looking a little bit at plastic boots online, is there anything you would recommend? Also, are there any that are comfortable enough to be able to walk a couple of miles on a dirt trail if there is no snow cover in the area?

I have the Koflach Degre's and I find them to be incredibly comfortable. You could easily wear them a few miles on dirt trails if needed. Its not ideal, but its better than carrying two pairs of boots.
I've worn my Koflach Degre boots all day long during a 12 mile approach and I have always been comfortable.
