Volunteering on the summit

This was Brad and my first time doing this and i have to admit i was a little worried if they would like my cooking .lets just say i was happy every time we sat down and there was no talking for a little bit ,they were to busy eating . it was even better when they went back for seconds .We are to make extra food for lunches and that was even a challenge when they eat almost all of it at dinner .
the weather was nice for half the week and the other was in the clouds and rain but Brad and i still went out for walks . I still had fun going out side in the rain and 50 mph winds ,you cant do that at home .
if you never volunteered before ,you can cook ,clean and get along with the crew then you will do just fine .

If Tina and I volunteered, with her being Pennsylvania Dutch, everyone would gain five, ten pounds during our week. Can you say Shoe-fly Pies, Whoopie Pies, Hawg-Maw, Schnitz & Knepp.

And they would love it all. With the thinner air and wind you just work harder here on the summit than at home. So, you get tired quickly (Charlie, how were those naps?) and you are always hungry looking for a snack. The crew made a steady stream down to the kitchen for something to drink - or breakfast - or the snack mid-morning (sometimes this was at 8:30 AM) - or the late morning snack - then down for lunch - and multiple times during the afternoon. They love things to grab and snack on. So, you and Tina would fit in just fine.

And with all that - you will lose weight.

I just got a very nice thank you card from the crew Charlie and I worked with on the summit. They are all very busy and still they have time to do this. A big THANK YOU to you all.

And this was thread was started back in October . . . now it's March . . . and the feelings about volunteering are still the same. I have volunteered twice at the summit - once in summer and once in winter. No matter what time of year you're up there it's the best. Having hiked Mt. Washington many, many times over the years (first time 1970 - last time 2009) I can still say that there is no substitute for volunteering! If you hike up, or drive up you will get only a few hours at the summit, at best, before you HAVE to move on, so you won't be stranded at the top with dusk approaching. But volunteering, you get 24/7 for a week!! There simply is no comparison. To be able to walk out on the deck at 11:30 PM - just to take in the stars before heading to bed (or how about sleeping in your sleeping bag ON the deck under the stars!!) - to wake and run out for the sunrise before breakfast - to be able to experience the summit in 100 mph winds for a few minutes and dash back inside to safety - these are things that are impossible - or near impossible without being "ON" the summit . . . experiences that I will remember the rest of my life. To cook - to clean - I would spend a million hours doing that for the "privilege" of spending "unique, quality time" on the summit of Mt. Washington . . .
Volunteering is simply AWESOME!! Can't wait until I get another chance in my life to do it again . . .
