    Thumbs up Nordwand (Northface)

Has anyone seen it? It a pretty decent foreign language historical drama film that takes place in 1936 and concerns the failed and fatal attempt by 2 climbers to scale the north face of the Eiger. I was impressed at the primitiveness of much of the equipment/clothing that was employed at the time.

Default Saw it and liked it generally (spoiler alert inside)

So all of the things they did are the things they now teach us not to do! Of course it's just a movie, but they seemed to push on in spite of everything. I can't imagine sleeping in that storm in a down bag in a tent and they just wrapped some wool around them...yikes. I didn't know the story and I thought someone was going to live, but I wasn't surpirised they didn't make it.

I saw it as well. I thought it was pretty well made in general and captured a lot of the details (and the emotions of the things going on in parallel to the climb) quite well. Pretty amazing to think of many of the first ascent attempts being made back in those days and the equipment and conditions they were able to do it with!

Very good movie, and it plays out the way it should have. No "Hollywood" flash and bang.

If anyone is interested, it is on Netflix as a DVD rental as well as Netflix streaming.

We saw it a few months ago and gave it "2 Thumbs Up." Very sad at the end though.

I saw a similar thread on VFTT and that was what got me to watching Northface. They also had some other ideas that I enjoyed:

Southbounders - a fiction story about a Southbound AT hiker. The story is fun and it seems to agree with the sentiments of real AT hikers - available on Netflix

Trek - 4 guys hiked the AT and brought along a camera, decent video quality and entertaining....since it's true the view of the trail is realistic - had to buy this one, even the library network didn't have it.

5 million steps - Inetrviews with 14 hikers and views of them on the trail, very old but not bad - I got the VHS at the library and I had flashbacks to Jr. High

I'm looking into/exploring the possibility of some long distance hiking, so if others have suggestions I'm currently devouring a large crop of books on the subject, but sometimes it's nice to just stare at a video instead.
