The Dickey Notch is perhaps not quite as well known as other notches in the Whites such as Crawford Notch, and Franconia Notch. This little notch is bordered to the west by Cone Mountain and to the east by Dickey Mountain. There is a XC ski trail that runs through this notch. The south end of this trail can be accessed from the trailhead for the Welch-Dickey Loop Trail. The north end is accessible from a gated logging road off the Mill Brook Road in the Thornton area.
This past weekend, my friend Marty & I hiked the ski trail through Dickey Notch and explored a few of the many ledges in the surrounding area.
While walking through the notch itself, we admired a picturesque little chain of beaver ponds located on the west side of the ski trail (photo below).
