Alpine Garden

I will be hiking up the Lion's Head on June 18th to watch my brother finish the road race...Any ideas if teh Alpine Garden will still be in bloom...I have been too late on all prior hikes!

Can't imagine that you would miss it - by MY calculations, June 18th should be the HEIGHT of Spring for the summit - thus making the Alpine Garden an absolute explosion of color and blooms . . . Have fun!! I'm jealous!

Lapland Rosebay, Alpine Azalea and Diapensia are coming into full bloom there right now.

After seeing the Eisenhower pics from this weekend I was hoping the Alpine Garden would be at least a week or so behind. Gotta hang on for three more weeks!!!

Diapensia in bloom and some purple and yellow flowers too.

Most of the area is just grass, but there are plenty of flowers mixed in.

And lots of black spiders if you're into spiders.

Hiked down there on Wed evening, as has been stated, Diapensia and Rosebay were blooming and there were some pretty large patches of them right off the Auto Road. But looks like there is still more to come. It is completely clear of snow, but not bugs. If winds are coming in from the west/north, the alpine garden is completely sheltered from the wind and blackflies have been pretty terrible as of recent, so come prepared.

I'm running in the race as well and considering hiking down if I feel good. I might have to take a detour over there as well.

Shown in the photo collage below is a sampling of the wildflowers seen on 10-June-2011 during a trek along a portion of the Alpine Garden Trail, as well as other trails such as the Lawn Cutoff, and Camel Trail.

Perhaps not everything shown here will be in bloom when you make your visit, but for certain there will be wildflowers that are still in bloom.
