For the greater part of the twentieth century, Ray Evans was a well known and highly regarded White Mountain historian and denizen of the mountains of New Hampshire. Windswept ran a piece about Ray following his death in 2001 and I wrote a brief story about him in 2007. He loved the White Mountains unconditionally, and his life shines a beacon on an integral part of their modern history.

I recently received an email from Courtney Evans Simpson, the granddaughter of Ray Evans. She had stumbled across my story about Ray on the Internet and she was grateful that I had taken the time to remember him. Because of her words, I thought I would share her letter and my original story with you here on the Forums as a way to remember Ray; perhaps bring a smile to the face of anyone that knew him or introduce a not long-departed legend to a new generation of hikers in the White Mountains.
