The new AMC Outdoors magazine was in my mailbox today with a short article about Mount Washington's snow rangers. A photo of the old Hermit Lake shelter caught my eye.

Does anybody know more about this shelter? Where was it located? Are there any more photos?

Maybe its the tele-photo lens talking but it looks like its right at the base of the Little Headwall.

When was the "new" cabin built? I was involved in an accident on Lion's Head in the late 1950's (I think). When we ran (and I mean ran) down Lions Head trail we did not have far to head up to Ho Jo's to get the ranger and radio for help and a Dr. We hit the Tucks trail - turned right - and the shelter was not far up the trail. It may be the current shelter was there in the late 1950's.

HoJos, or the Tuckerman Ravine Warming Hut, shown in the latest AMC Outdoors, was owned by the WMNF and run by the AMC. The old building was there when I was working on the Snow Ranger's building about 1963 and the AMC was providing meals for the work crew who were sleeping in a small quonset hut. If I recall there was a propane leak that caused the explosion that destroyed HoJos somewhere around 1970. The new AMC building was built on the same spot.

If the current building was built around 1970 then it is certainly the same spot. I have AMC Guide Books from the early 1960's and Ho Jo's is commented as being the same location.

Must have been smaller trees and a big lens that made it look so much closer to the Ravine.
