    Default biggest temp diffrence base to summit

    hello
    i enjoy looking at the auto road weather profile.i'm curious as what is the biggest known temperture diffrence.

    Hmmm...since November 17th not one reply, that is sad.

    The answer might not actually be that exciting. The theoretical maximum is governed by physics in that dry air rises and cools at a maximum rate of about 5.5F per 1,000 feet. So, from the auto road base to the summit the max difference is about 25F. There are some other complications that could increase this number by a small amount, but not much.

    Now, with a temperature inversion there is no limit. When warm air moves in aloft and traps cold air at the surface the valleys can easily be 25F colder than the summit.
