This photo/ad was in Northern Woodlands Magazine, and it implies the image was taken in Maine or New Hampshire. Does anybody know where this is? Honestly, it looks more like New Zealand than New England. The mountains just look too steep.

You may be right! 8 ) If it truly is New England, my guess would be Maine in the Rangeley/Stratton corridor of the AT.

My guess is somewhere in Alaska. It has to be someplace with spruce and balsam. That's a large lake in the middle, and the configuration of mountains doesn't fit Umbagog, Moosehead, Mooselookmeguntic, Rangeley, Flagstaff, Chesuncook, or any other ones I could think of.
I didn't think of Alaska, that is a possibility.
I sent them an email. Let's see if I get an answer.
If that is someplace in New England, I want to go there.
....It's in Alaska.
They responded to my email.

I'm thinking Scotland, probably south of Inverness and north of Perth. It's a glacial landscape with long narrow lakes, and those dark-green squarish shapes on the hillside in the background look like Scottish-type conifer plantations. But I could be totally off base.
You're correct, I need a more challenging photo. But you need to guess where more precisely. Hint, the water in the distance is saltwater.
Somebody else should post a photo. And it should have a large enough field of view to make an educated guess on the location, just like krummholz did with geography, geology, etc.
We may have come to the limits of my geography knowledge. The well-beaten trail in the foreground makes me think West Highland Way, and the saltwater hint makes me think Loch Linnhe, but I can't get things to match up. I've been to Scotland once but I'm not horribly familiar with it. We'll see if anyone else comes up with it, and then I will post a "Where is it?" photo.
