Default December Contest: Total Minutes of Sunshine for the Month

I had an idea & decided to step in for tdb 1977 with a December contest. The contest will be to guess what the total number of minutes of sunshine will be for the month of December. The person to guess the closest without going over will be the winner. Looking forward to your next contest in January tdb 1977.

    1. All answers must be in whole integers
    2. One submission per forum ID
    3. There can be no duplicates. First person to submit a particular number will own that guess.
    4. If the proper answer is not selected by anyone, the winner will be the closest guess, without going over, according to the F6 report.
    5. Any attempt to alter the summit sunshine timeframe will be an automatic disqualification.
    6. All guesses must be submitted here on this forum by the end of November 30th.
    7. The official source of data is the Daily F6 as published on the Observatory's web site.
    8. Anyone & everyone will be allowed to enter.
    9. Most of all... Have Fun!!!

I think people will need a little help with this one.

First, this measurement is totally subjective...it's just an estimate. There is no machine measuring sunshine minutes. Just an observer making estimates on his fingers during the night shift. It's a very silly data point.

Second, according to the F6 the most there could be is 16,968. If you guess more than this you will lose. If you guess anywhere even close to that then you need a lesson in Mount Washington weather. Last year there was 5,755. Check the F-6 data posted on the main site for prior years.

With that said, my guess is 4,242. Seven years of bad luck if anybody else guesses within a few minutes of me.

What's the logic of this? Those are "Price Is Right" rules.

For example, the end result is 3,000 minutes. There are two guesses in the competition because this forum is as dead as a doorknob and they are 1 minute and 3,005 minutes. The person who guesses 1 minute wins?

    I'll pick a nice even number, 4300.

So glad that I'll be in this contest since I missed the last one.

No, I'm just wondering what the logic is to this rule?

Many of these previous contests have used this rule. I think the people who participate in these contests are in it for fun, & are not trying to win on a crazy technicality, like an entry of 1 minute. I think that everyone who enters, is more in tune with trying to come up with an educated answer, or even a wild, but realistic guess to the contest questions.
