How many new spam threads does the MWO forums receive per day?

You would think that the spammers would learn... they should know by now that their posts only stay up for a few hours at the most. The moderators do an excellent job of keeping this place clean and uncluttered. So, to the mods, I'd like to say "thanks, your hard work is greatly appreciated."

Probably a dozen or two. Most of the spammers get banned before they ever post any comments. They stick out like sore thumbs. It would be nice to get a more secure registration feature so spammers had a harder time signing up.

Thanks for the reply Bill. I was curious as it seems to me that MWO is having more than it's share of them.

I don't think MWO has more than normal. It just has less regular activity so the spam stands out.

I disagree. Two forums I frequent many times a day disallow the use of free email accounts, require email verification and require new users to type back what is written. I've only seen one spammer, on one of them, in the last six months, whereas MWO seems to have an inordinate amount of them. IMHO, of course.

Your third verification would be helpful. Free email accounts wouldn't stop much. Most of our spam comes from strange email extensions. Not hotmail or yahoo. Plus, too many people use free email accounts...like me.

How about if a new sign-up is asked a basic MWO or mountaineering question; something that anyone with a legitimate interest in this forum would obviously know or could easily find out.

    Questions like:
Give me the name of any one trail heading up to the summit?
The spike-like attachments that climbers fasten to their boots are called what?

Or maybe even multiple choice like:
What state is MWO located in? A) Vermont B) New Hampshire C) New England D) Washington

On this note - does it help to use the 'report this post' feature on new spam posts or is it redundant?
