More cool stuff, Joey.My favorite waterfall changes evrytime I visit a new one. Ripley and Arethusa in Crawford Notch, Glen Ellis and the Crystal Cascede in Pinkham, then there's The Gorge in Amonoosuc Ravine, Bridal Veil Falls on the west side of Kinsman Ridge... the list goes on.

How was it up Lions Head? I tried on Monday 4/9 and did
not get to far without crampons. Looks like a blast up on top.
(Never been in the winter)
It would be cool to add a little adventure story with the photos.

The lower steep section of Lions Head was pretty good actually. All of the recent snow fall really made that section quite a bit easier to navigate. There were some well packed steps from previous hikers which made life easier for us. Once we were above that steep section the trail was a bit less packed & there were some good drifts. Visibility was not great but it wasn't so bad & we decided to get to Lions Head and then plan our next step.

Wind was going pretty good & the snow was really whipping around but we made Lions Head. Once at Lions Head my legs began to cramp up. The cramps were not so bad that we had to turn around but the group would have to slow down considerably in order for us to even have a chance to make the summit. We decided to try for Split Rock and if we were successful in making Split Rock we would decide if we could make the summit.

Climbing was slow but we made Split Rock. By this time my legs were almost constantly cramping up with different levels of severity. Sometimes they would be fine & then BAM cramps for the next 20 mins. We rested for a lot longer than we wanted to at Split Rock. I ate lots of bananas and GORP trying to ease my cramped legs. We discussed what our next move should be & although I thought I'd be able to make the summit, I offered to remain at split rock while the team made the final push up the summit cone. I had already made the summit and one of the climbers in our group had never made the summit in winter. He was a really great person and I wanted him to have the opportunity to see the summit in all it's winter glory. The "offer" for me to remain at split rock was shot down by the team.

We decided that we should make the summit push at my pace. If I felt I had to turn around in order to have enough strength left for the descent, then we would turn around at that very moment, no matter how close we were to the summit.

We made the summit after a long climb from Split Rock and stayed on top long enough for a few photos & some food/drink. Then down we came. I was able to push all the way from the summit to Lions Head without needing to stop. At Lions Head I gave my team an honest evaluation of my current condition. My evaluation was that my legs were feeling a "stumble-y" and that I wanted to be roped up for the descent of the steep section on Lions Head.

Once at the steep section of Lions Head I was roped up as well as another team member and we descended the steeps without incident. Once back on Tucks trail we made a rapid descent to the parking lot and we were happy that we made it back safe, sound and under our own power.

Our ascent took 6 hours due to my leg cramps but I feel we made good decisions based on the fact the we were very honest with each other in terms of how we felt physically. The leg cramps really bummed me out. Thats the first time something like that has ever happened to me while climbing. I think it was just one of those weird things that your body does to you every once in a while.

I started up Lions head last week and did not make
it far and so wondered what it would have been like
to keep going to the top. So thanks for that great
