Mount Washington Observatory Unveils A New Image

North Conway, NH - For the past 75 years, Mount Washington Observatory has been firmly dedicated to monitoring and recording hourly weather data on the summit of Mount Washington. As a non-profit organization with such a rich history — from record-breaking wind gusts to earning the reputation for having the  “World’s Worst Weather” — it is with enthusiasm that the Mount Washington Observatory unveils a new logo and branding as it proceeds into the future.

The new logo conveys the scientific non-profit’s depth of history, while modernizing its look and feel. Through the use of bold color and dramatic silhouettes, Mount Washington Observatory enlivens its past while embracing what is to come as an innovative educational and scientific resource like no other.

Still incorporating icons that distinguish the summit from others, the mountain’s profile and towers resonate with the local community and illustrate the organization’s unique location. Yet, one of the major differentiators of the new logo is its fast and intense color. As a common element on the scientific instruments used by summit Observers, such as the Hays wind chart recorder, red was selected as the primary color. Commanding attention and as a very factual, data like color, the red’s boldness communicates the energy behind the Observatory’s ongoing efforts. In combination with the dramatic movement of sweeping lines, the new logo feels fast and strong similar to the extreme weather and wind that the summit is famous for.

“What forms this amazingly unique non-profit organization is not only our incredible weather, but also the support and effort of so many individuals,” says Scot Henley, Executive Director of the Mount Washington Observatory. “With that, we also opted to include a term frequently used by staff, Board members, volunteers and local residents and members of the wider mountain community. The decision to incorporate the word “Obs”, short for Observatory, into the logo was to really embrace the strong community that makes our efforts feasible. It is a way to let the outside public in and become part of what makes this place so special.”

Mount Washington Observatory is a private, non-profit, member-supported organization with a mission to advance understanding of the natural systems that create the Earth's weather and climate. Since 1932, the Observatory has been monitoring the elements in one of the most extreme locations on Earth, using this unique site for scientific research and educational outreach.
